Sylvia Major is the founder and instructor of Wonderling Nature Program. Sylvia loves sharing her wonder and knowledge of the natural world with the next generation. She is deeply inspired to provide a foundation for children to create a sustainable earth for themselves.
Sylvia began teaching nature appreciation in 2012 with guided nature walks for homeschoolers. In 2013, she searched for a local outdoor program for her preschool-aged son. Because there weren't any such programs nearby, Sylvia recognized the strong need in her community for children to connect with and learn about nature. She decided to use her background in biology, her teaching skills, and her passion for nature to start her own program. Wonderling was born!
Before motherhood, Sylvia worked in academic and biological field research. She has a Master's degree in Ecology and Evolution, with a concentration in Behavioral Ecology (animal behavior). This is just a fancy way of saying Sylvia really, really likes chasing and learning about critters. Teaching was an integral part of graduate school and she grew to love it...enough so that she has chosen to homeschool her own son and any future progeny. Now, Sylvia appreciates the opportunity to share her knowledge and passions with other children as well.
In working with children, Sylvia uses connection-based paradigms. She aims to develop relationships with the children and to help them develop a connection with each other and the environment. Her approach to teaching is to nurture a sense of wonder and to provide guidance in the exciting quest to find answers.
Sylvia has EMSA CPR and First Aid Certification and was formerly certified in Wilderness First Aid. Sylvia is pursuing ongoing education with the Kamana Naturalist Training Program through the Wilderness Awareness School. Sylvia’s resume is available upon request.
