Overview
The Wonderling Nature Program is an outdoor nature appreciation class for children. The instructor safely guides the children on adventures where children learn first-hand about local ecology and natural history. Nature-themed games and activities are used to heighten nature awareness and the spirit of fun.
We meet at various regional parks within 20 miles of central Fremont, CA. Classes are held entirely outdoors and we meet rain or shine. Because classes are small, activities can be tailored to accommodate the ages of the children in each class. In general, Wonderling classes are best for children ages 3-10 years. Parent participation is sometimes optional (see note below*), though at least one adult besides the instructor will always remain with the class. Participants bring their own food and water.
The Wonderling Nature Program strives for zero waste and minimal impact on the environments we visit.

Teaching Style
In the Wonderling Nature Program, students receive a rich blend of unique learning opportunities. Trained as biological researcher, Sylvia brings a wealth of knowledge and critical thinking skills. The academic perspective is balanced by intuitive, connection-based approaches. Jon Young's 8 Shields Model is used to facilitate connection with nature, with community, and with self. This model includes “Coyote mentoring,” a style of teaching that inspires students to seek answers themselves by following their own wonder. The process is one that is integrative and immersive. Learning involves all of the senses, intuition, and clear thinking.
Is your child a good fit for Wonderling?
Temperament, interest, and the ability to be comfortable outdoors for the duration of class are more important than the age of your child. Please make sure your child is willing and able to fulfill the following:
For Younger Siblings and Children Under 3
Children under 3 years and those who aren't potty-trained will always need to be accompanied by an adult. Trails are sometimes not stroller friendly but baby carriers are welcome and encouraged. We make plenty of stops and don't travel far!

Temperament, interest, and the ability to be comfortable outdoors for the duration of class are more important than the age of your child. Please make sure your child is willing and able to fulfill the following:
- Walk safely on uneven terrain (or be carried by an adult)
- Travel on foot for at least 1 mile, with breaks
- Carry their own backpack with food, water, and other personal essentials
- Eliminate outdoors -- bathrooms and running water aren't usually available once we leave the parking area
- Be around dogs or other animals we may encounter on or off the trail
- Withstand the elements for the duration of class – we meet in all weather
- Get dirty or wet (change of clothes in the car recommended!)
- Responsive to gentle guidance and willingness to follow instructions
- Willing to adhere to class rules and guidelines
